A driver skidded into a crowd of street-race spectators in Maryland this morning and killed eight people, but later told police he was not part of the race, the Washington Post reports. The driver and at least four others were injured in the crash, which also killed the car's passenger. “It was a very horrific scene,” one policeman said. “There are a lot of questions we still need answers to.”

The driver told police he was blinded by drag-racers on Indian Head Highway, a known speed strip, and barreled blindly into the crowd. Police suspect that racers and spectators fled the scene but have not yet pressed charges. About 40 family members huddled at the cold crash site this morning, watching investigators bag clothing, shoes, and other items from the victims. (More street racing stories.)
