A sad and bizarre murder trial gets underway tomorrow in Manhattan, involving a mother who admits killing her autistic 8-year-old son but who says she did so to protect him from abuse, reports the New York Law Journal. But that doesn't scratch the surface of the case involving Gigi Jordan, a 54-year-old former pharmaceutical executive. Jordan has alleged that her first husband, Philly businessman Raymond Mirra, planned to kill her or have her locked up in an institution. And if that happened, she feared that her second husband, Emil Tzekov, would then gain custody of their son, 8-year-old Jude; she didn't want that to happen because she says Tzekov sexually abused the boy for years as part of a satanic cult.
In 2010, she fed the boy, who was also mute, an overdose of prescription meds. At Rikers, where she's been ever since, she strategized about a defense her legal team called "altruistic filicide," reports the New York Times. Jordan has been through several lawyers, and her new attorneys appear to have abandoned the "altruistic filicide" defense and instead will try to prove that she suffered from "extreme emotional disturbance." But they'll have to convince the jury that her first husband did indeed intend to do her harm. He denies it, and her second husband denies the abuse allegations. “I can guarantee you, it’s going to be a most interesting case,” the judge told prospective jurors last week.
