(Newser) – Nassau Coliseum on Long Island fell quiet after Joe Thornton put San Jose ahead of New York, 2-0 early in the third period. But goals by Andy Hilbert and Mike Comrie within 59 seconds of each other tied the game, and Freddy Meyer's shot from the right circle gave the Islanders an improbable 3-2 victory today, reports Newsday.

The Isles' three goals game against Sharks ironman goalie Evegeni Nabakov, who left the game in the second period after a facial cut courtesy of a Radek Martinek slapshot, but returned in the third. Rick DiPietro earned the victory, the Isles' fourth straight, with 28 saves, including one with his right pad in the goalmouth with under a minute to play. (Read more hockey stories.)
