There's shooting yourself in the foot, and there's retired baseball slugger Jose Canseco, who has been hospitalized after shooting himself in the left hand, KLAS-TV reports. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon when Canseco was cleaning a .45 caliber handgun at home in Las Vegas. "I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string," his fiancee told the Los Angeles Times, adding that doctors say the hand will never again be fully functional.

The finger "will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery," she said. She tweeted last night that he was "in surgery," and later that she was "finally safe and sound" with him. "So glad he's ok and soooo glad I was there when it happened," she posted. (More Jose Canseco stories.)
