Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened by the side of a road in Maryland's Pocomoke Forest on Friday night—but they know that suspect Kenny George White did not have a good 18th birthday. Police say that about an hour before White turned 18 at midnight, he apparently hit a deer with his vehicle and then shot a man police frame as a good Samaritan who stopped at the scene in rural Worcester County, the Delmarva Daily Times reports. The 21-year-old victim, who was treated in the hospital for birdshot injuries to his lower body after being shot twice with a shotgun, was with two companions who managed to get White's license plate number, police say.

A few hours after the shooting, which police believe followed some kind of argument over the injured deer, White was arrested and charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, WBOC reports. He would have been charged as an adult anyway because of the firearm, police say, though he was still 17 at the time of the incident. The deer, meanwhile, wasn't shot but had two broken legs and died at the scene. Says a Worcester County Bureau of Investigation detective: "It is a very strange story." (More deer stories.)
