Amy Pascal: 'Angie Didn't Care' About Leaked Emails

Sony may not be officially using the word "fired," but soon-to-be-former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal certainly is. "All the women here are doing incredible things in this world. All I did was get fired," Pascal told Tina Brown Tuesday at San Francisco's Women in the World conference, re/code reports. Pascal lost her position as a result of emails leaked in the Sony hack, including one in which she made a racially-tinged Obama joke and others in which Angelina Jolie was heartily decried. As to the latter ones, which involved producer Scott Rudin calling Jolie a "minimally talented spoiled brat," Pascal revealed that "Angie didn't care." She said those and other emails between her and Rudin were simply part of a 30-year relationship that involves playful "role-playing" and an "ongoing fight." And, she noted, she was surprised the press was so harsh about the emails: "People found reasons that going through my trash and printing it was an OK thing to do. They found a way to justify that. And they have to live with that."

And, she added, the leaked emails didn't hurt Tinseltown relationships much: "Everybody understood because we all live in this weird thing called Hollywood. If we all actually were nice, it wouldn’t work." The lesson she learned? "You should always say exactly what you think directly to people all the time. In the moment, the first time." But, she added, that might not go over well because celebrities are "bottomless pits of need. You’ve never seen anything like it." Then, with sarcasm: "They are so great. They’re this magical thing that no one else can be. They’re filled with the need to be loved ... but that’s because they’re magical." As for the Sony hack's "revelation" that female celebrities are paid less than their male counterparts? "I run a business," she said. "People want to work for less money, I pay them less money. ... Women shouldn’t work for less money. They should know what they’re worth. Women shouldn’t take less. ‘Stop, you don’t need the job that bad.'" (More Amy Pascal stories.)
