As a huge Kentucky fan, Ashley Judd would love to be spending all her time talking basketball these days. Instead, she's researching what legal action she can take against the Twitter trolls who heaped "humiliating and violent" abuse on her when she dared to tweet a negative opinion about a rival team. In an essay at mic.com, Judd writes of the "devastating social norm" that makes her and any woman on the Internet vulnerable to such attacks, and she also explains in full why she's not letting it go this time: "I am a survivor of sexual assault, rape and incest."
Judd recounts the rapes she endured as a 15-year-old, along with the "purgative, cathartic works" she has done in recent years in recovery. "The nature of recovering from trauma is that it can be ongoing, with deeper levels of healing and freedom coming with indefatigable persistence to keep chipping away at it." That's why she's pushing for an end to the days when demands that she be raped and murdered are shrugged off in a hey-that's-life-on-the-Internet manner.
