Reported Kidnap Victim Is Found Safe

The strange kidnapping case of Denise Huskins in California is over in the most important sense: The 29-year-old is safe and sound, reports the Los Angeles Times. Now police have to figure out what on earth happened. The saga began Monday afternoon when her boyfriend called police to report that she had been abducted for ransom hours earlier from his home in Vallejo. Then yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle got an emailed recording of a woman believed to be Huskins. “I’m kidnapped, otherwise I’m fine," she said, before including a reference to the French Alps plane crash to prove the date. This morning, Huskins left a voicemail for her dad informing him that she was OK and had been dropped off at his home in Huntington Beach, more than 400 miles away from Vallejo.

Mike Huskins wasn't home at the time, and he called police after hearing the voicemail so they could go check on her. "It doesn’t sound like she knew what a big deal this was," he says. "She said, 'Dad, I just want to let you know that I’m all right.’” Police in Vallejo and Huntington Beach are working together to investigate the case, and they've named no suspects. “We are still treating this as a kidnap for ransom,” says one police official. “We have no reason to believe otherwise. At this point, from an investigative standpoint, nothing has changed." Huskins and boyfriend Aaron Quinn work together as physical therapists, and neither has spoken to the media since Huskins' safe return. (More kidnapping stories.)
