The police union in Baltimore slammed what it called a rush to judgment against the six officers in the Freddie Gray case and requested that prosecutor Marilyn Mosby recuse herself from the case in favor of a special prosecutor. In a letter to Mosby, the union alleges "many conflicts of interest," including her marriage to a city councilman and her acceptance of a $5,000 campaign contribution from the Gray family's attorney, reports the Baltimore Sun. "It is clear that your husband's political future will be directly impacted, for better or worse, by the outcome of your investigation," says the letter, referring to husband Nick Mosby.
Marilyn Mosby flatly rejected the allegations of a conflict and the request to recuse herself. "The people of Baltimore city elected me, and there is no accountability with a special prosecutor," she said. "I will prosecute any case within my jurisdiction." Meanwhile, union attorney Michael Davey said that, "in my 20 years, I have never seen such a hurried rush to file criminal charges," reports NBC News. He blamed massive publicity for the rush, adding, "These officers did nothing wrong."
