Heinz has just learned an embarrassing marketing lesson. A customer in Germany scanned the QR code on a bottle to take part in the company's design-your-own-label contest, reports the Local. Except the website that came up wasn't for the contest, it was for a hard-core porn site. The explanation turned out to be a simple one: The contest expired in 2014, and Heinz didn't bother to hang on to the domain name. Porn company Fundorado then snapped it up.
"It's incomprehensible that you didn't reserve the domain for one or two years," the customer wrote on Heinz's Facebook page. "It really doesn't cost the Earth." The company professed its regret, and offered to send him a free bottle with his own label. Fundorado, again trumping the corporate giant in the marketing biz, immediately offered him a free one-year subscription. As Consumerist notes, watch those leftover bottles at the Fourth of July barbecue. (More Heinz ketchup stories.)
