You've probably seen a magazine spread or two about the "tiny house" movement, maybe even felt a twinge of envy toward those who've turned their back on wasted space to embrace uber-efficient living. Well, Lauren Modery provides your antidote in an essay at Medium addressed to tiny-house dwellers that asks in its headline, "Do you ever wake up wondering, 'I've made a huge mistake?'" Sure, "you look so freakin' happy in that Buzzfeed post," but surely doubts emerge when you "lie awake at night, your face four inches from the ceiling because the only place your bed fits is above the kitchen sink which also acts as your shower."
Modery's got lots of questions about living in 250 square feet, like, "Seriously, where do you put your s---?" And what about getting a little privacy when your partner is roughly 10 feet away at all times? "Don't you feel like a rat trapped in a cage? Don't you ever want to turn toward your lover or spawn and shout, 'Get out! Get out of my tiny house!'" Modery adds that her rant is "half in jest" and that she commends those who can make this kind of downsizing work. "But I am curious if it's all peaches and cream like the swanky design magazines suggest." Click for her full, entertaining post. (More tiny houses stories.)
