Two women are dead after a dramatic chase that took police from Georgia to Alabama, where a standoff ensued yesterday. Police say Sandra Barnett, 49, was kidnapped from her home in Ellenwood, Ga., on Wednesday and whisked away in a black Dodge Durango, driven by her husband’s mistress. Neighbors tell WXIA they became suspicious when they noticed the SUV in Barnett’s driveway; the special needs teacher had recently replaced a latch on her backyard gate, thinking someone had messed with it. The neighbors say Barnett’s husband later told them, "I hope she didn't kidnap her."
Police say a "relative" reported the abduction, per the AP. The vehicle was discovered yesterday morning leaving a gas station off I-20 in west Georgia, reports the Anniston Star. Authorities chased the Durango into Alabama, where the female driver suddenly pulled over at mile marker 208. There was a short standoff with police, but "I don't think any shots were fired by any law enforcement," the chief deputy with Georgia’s Carroll County Sheriff's Office tells AL.com. The kidnapping suspect then grabbed a gun from the backseat of the SUV, shot Barnett, then shot herself, an officer says. Authorities found both women dead inside. (More kidnapping stories.)
