A highway expansion in Oklahoma City will wipe out an old pet cemetery, but the more unusual part of the story is the effort that state officials are making out of respect to the animals. They're reaching out to the public—a construction engineer put up an ad on Craigslist—so owners can retrieve grave markers, reports KFOR. They've also mowed the area and set off the markers with yellow flags. The cemetery dates back to the 1950s, and it looks like it hasn't been used much in the last 20 years or so. Meanwhile, a woman has offered to relocated unclaimed markers on her property.
“From one animal lover to another, I think we ought to show some respect for some people who spent some money at some time to bury an animal,” says state construction engineer Joe Echelle. (More Oklahoma City stories.)
