A woman held hostage since April by her boyfriend in her apartment in Lenexa, Kansas, ended her horrifying ordeal via one of life's more innocuous chores: Paying the rent. "Do not call police, but send help," read the note tucked in her rent payment, reports KSHB. So apartment manager Beth Galley, who found the note, worked with police and the building's maintenance worker Mychael Reyes to move in on Sunday night. "I just said there was a water issue and I just wanted her to step outside so I could talk to her about it," says Reyes, who adds his fingers were numb from anxiety. "Then when I got around the corner out of his sight, I told her to get downstairs because the cops were downstairs. I just wanted to get her out of there."
The unnamed 46-year-old woman managed to escape via the ruse about 8:30pm; a four-hour standoff between police and 34-year-old Anthony Darryl Allen followed. Police say Allen, an unemployed Army veteran, started a gas leak in the apartment and swallowed bug repellant and laundry detergent in an apparent attempt to end his life, before he was taken into custody. He's charged with two counts of rape stemming from alleged incidents on June 26 and July 7, notes KCTV, as well as one count of aggravated kidnapping. Allen has three previous domestic violence incidents on his record, all involving restraining a woman. Bail has been set at $500,000.
