UK Questions Mount Over US 'Torture Flights'

Amid pressure British officials said yesterday that they were “working behind the scenes” to root out more information about the CIA rendition flights that landed on British soil, the Guardian reports. The UN’s special torture investigator has said there is credible evidence to suggest that the US ran a detention center on the British territory of Diego Garcia, rather than simply refueling planes there.

Last month, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband admitted that US flights carrying detainees had refueled in the Indian Ocean territory, but so far officials haven’t divulged the identities or fates of the prisoners. It won't “rebuild public confidence if we say that two people were illegally taken through British territory but then refuse to reveal” their fates, one human rights lawyer said. (More CIA stories.)
