A man with a semi-automatic handgun walked up to a Las Vegas police SUV waiting at a red light and opened fire, striking one officer in the right hand, authorities said. Police say the officer was taken to the University Medical Center's trauma center. He was hospitalized in good condition for the non-life threatening injury. The suspected gunman was later arrested. Police called the shooting an ambush, although no motive or details were given.

The shooting happened about 12:15pm yesterday, when two officers in a marked police SUV were headed to a dollar store for a reported disturbance in southeastern Las Vegas. As the Ford SUV was waiting at a red light to turn left, a man with a semi-automatic handgun walked up and fired multiple shots. The officer who was not hurt chased the suspect and arrested him at a 7-11 store parking lot on the same block. The weapon was recovered from the scene. Authorities emphasized that the arrest was made without officers shooting back. (More Las Vegas stories.)
