New York's Scott Gomez hasn't been used often by Tom Renney in the shootout this season, but he rewarded his coach's gamble tonight with the winning attempt over Ryan Miller's right pad in a 3-2 victory at Buffalo. The Rangers, in completing a sweep of the Sabres for the first time since 1971-72, tied Ottawa for fifth in the East, reports AP.

The game started quickly as Jason Pominville and Fedor Tyutin exchanged goals in the first 90 seconds but both offenses were stymied until Sean Avery drilled Buffalo's Nathan Paetsch into the boards, recovered the puck, and set up Jaromir Jagr perfectly in the second period. Thomas Vanek eventually tied it for Buffalo, who dropped to 1-3-2 in its last six games. (More hockey stories.)
