Jack Kevorkian, the Michigan doctor who says he's helped at least 130 die and who's been convicted of second-degree murder in one such assisted suicide, says he plans to run for Congress in a Detroit suburb, the Oakland (Mich.) Press reports. Kevorkian, 79, will make an independent bid against the incumbent Republican; he’ll need 3,000 signatures to get on the ballot.
Kevorkian was paroled in June after serving eight years of a 10- to 25-year sentence for helping a man die in 1999. He promised never to assist in suicide again, and said yesterday, “We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government.” The prosecutor whose office was responsible for convicting Kevorkian dismissed the bid as “probably more of a publicity stunt.” (More Jack Kevorkian stories.)
