Malcolm Turnbull has been Australia's prime minister for just over a month, but he's already got a tall order before him. "If the leaders of this great nation have any common sense at all, they will introduce legislation to parliament to change the name of our currency as soon as possible," reads Thomas Probst's Change.org petition, which proposes basing the rebrand on a Simpsons episode. The name he suggests isn't "D'oh-llars" or "Blingfield": It's "Dollarydoos," the currency mentioned in a 1995 episode of the animated show in which Bart runs up an Australian family's phone bill with a collect call.
"Due to global commodity prices plummeting, the Australian economy is struggling," Probst writes in his petition, which had already garnered more than 16,000 signatures at the time of this writing. "That's why we need something to stimulate the Australian economy and that something is changing the name of the Australian currency to 'Dollarydoos.'" His somewhat reasonable assessment of why this plan may actually work is that it "will make millions of people around the world want to get their hands on some Australian currency due to the real life Simpsons reference, driving up the value of the Australian currency." (Mr. Burns would usually care about this sort of monetarily related development, but he's got his own news to contend with.)
