The idea of an ambitious woman is less scary to people than it was in the 1970s, but "I thought we would be much further," Gloria Steinem says in an interview with Cosmopolitan, ahead of the release of her new memoir. "Still, if you don't play a submissive role, if you don't do what you're supposed to do, you get to be a loud black woman or a bitchy white woman," she says. What does she recommend a woman say when someone calls her a bitch? "Thank you," Steinem says. "It totally disarms them … If you call them on it, it changes people's heads."
