Jared Fogle is now better known for exploiting children than for eating sandwiches, but he's still a celebrity, and prosecutors want to make an example out of him. In a court filing ahead of his formal sentencing in federal court next Thursday, a prosecutor urges a judge to give the former Subway spokesman 12½ years in prison, the maximum agreed under a plea deal for child pornography and underage sex charges, reports the Indianapolis Star. "Persons with a sexual attraction to young children may be difficult to deter, but these sentences matter," the court filing says. "These offenders frequently communicate with each other online, and they are concerned about the law enforcement efforts."

"The results of these cases help to deter and teach by example," the filing continues, and the Fogle result "will be closely watched by current and potential offenders who have not yet been identified." The filing also states that Fogle paid for sex with adults "on hundreds of occasions" and some of the child pornography in his possession featured children as young as 6, reports the Star, which notes that the federal judge is free to sentence Fogle to more, or less, than what prosecutors agreed to ask for. Co-conspirator Russell Taylor, former director of Fogle's Jared Foundation charity, has also pleaded guilty to child-porn charges and will be sentenced to at least 15 years in prison, NBC News reports. (Fogle has already paid restitution to most of the 14 victims prosecutors have identified.)
