A US Army soldier stationed in Germany was shot and killed by local police after holding his ex-girlfriend hostage, the New York Times reports. The unnamed soldier was located after the woman escaped; when he threatened a SWAT unit with an assault rifle, he was shot, and later died at a hospital.
Armed with an M-4 rifle he was authorized to use earlier but never returned, the soldier broke into the woman’s apartment late Thursday. US authorities confirmed they were cooperating with the Germans, but withheld further comment, saying “it’s too early.” The soldier, who has not been identified, is one of about 45,000 US military stationed in Germany.
