For those of you waiting with bated breath to see how Taylor Swift would respond to Kanye Swift name-dropping her in one of his new songs, wait no longer: She isn't happy. The relevant lyric in West's "Famous": "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that b---- famous." In a statement released to Billboard, Swift's rep says Kanye didn't ask Swift to approve the song in advance, but did ask her to release the single on her own Twitter account. "She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message," the statement continues, adding, "Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, 'I made that b---- famous.'"
That's not the story Kanye's telling, Billboard notes: On Twitter Friday morning, West insisted that he and Swift talked about the lyric for a full hour "and she thought it was funny and gave her blessings." He even claimed the sentiment originated with her, saying she once told a mutual friend, "I can’t be mad at Kanye because he made me famous!" He also clarified that the lyric is not a "diss" and that "B---- is an endearing term in hip hop." TMZ also reported, prior to Swift's statement, that Kanye had cleared the "joke" lyric with Taylor in advance, citing sources who say that Swift "gave him the thumbs-up." The gossip site is now acknowledging that Swift has denied that report. (Click for more on Kanye's epic Thursday.)
