Turns out a lot of people don't understand how IVF works, a fact Chrissy Teigen recently learned after explaining to People why she and husband John Legend chose to implant a female embryo for her first pregnancy. As Mary Elizabeth Williams points out on Salon, Twitter exploded after the story broke, and many of the reactions were not only rude but ignorant. Some people didn't seem to understand that Teigen and Legend created both male and female embryos and had to pick one to implant even if they had no idea what the gender was. "We didn't create a little girl. we had multiple embryos. girls and boys. we simply chose to put in a female first (and second)..." Teigen tweeted Wednesday. To a Twitter user who wrote, "I do think it's sad people would pick a specific gender / prefer a specific gender," Teigen responded, "I've already created embryos with a doctor. only after must it be random?"
To another who wrote, "What happens if ur kid decides 'she' wants 2 identify as 'he'? Y is picking gender important unless u hope 2 enforce it?" Teigen responded, "What in the...she can do whatever she wants...people really reaching for outrage here." Williams' favorite tweet of Teigen's reads, "'What...what...what if....your GIRL wants to...be......chem trails.....and cis....and....vegan...and....other buzzwords....'" Ultimately, Teigen tried to educate: "We didn't 'throw away' anything and still would love to have more of both in the future. hard to explain such a complicated process here," she wrote, adding, "You'd be surprised at how many people you know go through this." Legend chimed in Thursday: "No viable healthy embryo has been ignored. We just chose to put one in first. Please stop judging. It's very rude." (It's not Teigen's only recent Twitter fight.)
