Politics / Ted Cruz Romney: I'm Voting for Cruz But he doesn't sound all that excited about it By Evann Gastaldo, Newser Staff Posted Mar 18, 2016 4:17 PM CDT Copied Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks at a Republican presidential candidate, Ohio Gov. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke) Another somewhat endorse-y non-endorsement for Ted Cruz: "This week, in the Utah nominating caucus, I will vote for Senator Ted Cruz," Mitt Romney posted on Facebook Friday. Romney never actually uses any form of the word "endorse" in the statement, which Mashable refers to as a "meh-ndorsement." Rather, Romney explains, Republicans need to ensure Donald Trump doesn't become the nominee, and the only way to do that is to make sure "to have an open convention," Romney writes. "At this stage, the only way we can reach an open convention is for Senator Cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible," he continues. "I like Governor John Kasich. I have campaigned with him. He has a solid record as governor. I would have voted for him in Ohio. But a vote for Governor Kasich in future contests makes it extremely likely that Trumpism would prevail." Cruz's response to Romney was a bit more enthusiastic than Romney's statement: "Thank you, Governor!" he tweeted. Utah votes Tuesday, and early polling shows Cruz in the lead, the AP reports. (Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham also offered similarly lukewarm support for Cruz this week.) Report an error
