Freedom turned out to be a lot more dangerous than jail for North Carolina inmate Kelvin Singleton. Cops say a naked, headless body found in a rural area is that of the 26-year-old, who broke out of the Chowan County Jail on March 27 after using a sharpened toothbrush to threaten a guard, the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald reports. The partially decomposed body had been in the woods for around a week by the time it was discovered by a hunter last Thursday, investigators say. The body was found about 15 miles from the jail.
Police say the death, which they are treating as a homicide, is a mystery—as is the location of Singleton's head. "We have interviewed a ton of people," Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin tells the New York Daily News. "We don't have a motive or anything at this point—no suspect, no motive." Singleton had been in jail since January, when he allegedly robbed a tobacco store in Edenton and took off in the clerk's car. After his arrest on charges including armed robbery in that case, police found he was also wanted in Charlotte on charges including assault with a deadly weapon. (An inmate serving life without parole in Arkansas was shot dead during an escape attempt last week.)
