Rumors Fly as Cruz Teases 'Major Announcement'

Is Ted Cruz about to name his VP? The Republican contender says he'll make a "major announcement" at a 4pm press conference Wednesday in Indianapolis. Asked if it has anything to do with his potential VP, Cruz told reporters they'd have to wait and see, per Politico. Some speculation:

• Rumors are flying that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence may endorse Cruz at the event, reports the Hill. Both Cruz and Donald Trump have met with the governor, though Trump told CNN on Wednesday that Pence may not endorse either candidate.
• Trump is at least toying with the possibility that Cruz will name Carly Fiorina as his running mate. "I think it hurts him. I can't imagine he does it," he told Fox & Friends, per USA Today. Hopping over to Good Morning America, he said Fiorina "never resonated with the people. So, I mean, Carly is not going to do the trick."

• Announcing a running mate this early "would be an unusual development in a remarkable campaign, to say the least," writes Cooper Allen at USA Today. But it has been done before. Ronald Reagan named his pick for VP before the 1976 Republican convention, though he was ultimately defeated by Gerald Ford.
• After Cruz lost five states to Trump on Tuesday, John Podhoretz wouldn't be surprised if he threw in the towel. "If Trump wins the primary next week in the Hoosier State, Cruz is toast," he writes at the New York Post. "People are kidding themselves if they think Tuesday night's results won't have an effect on voters in Indiana and elsewhere."
