Diata Crockett, the St. Louis man accused of shooting his 8-month-old son dead as his wife fled with the baby in her arms is "obviously devastated over the loss of his son," his lawyer says. Crockett turned himself in Wednesday morning after making arrangements through attorney Scott Rosenblum, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Later in the day, prosecutors charged the 34-year-old with murder, armed criminal action, domestic assault, endangering a child, unlawful possession, and unlawful use of a weapon, the AP reports. Crockett, who was already wanted for a parole violation, is being held on $1 million bond.

Police say Crockett was in a car with his wife and the youngest three of their six children Tuesday afternoon when he became violent after she told him she wanted a divorce, according to court documents. He threatened to kill her and himself and started driving toward a secluded area. After she jumped from the car holding baby Reign Crockett, he fired a single shot when she was a few steps away, police say. She flagged down a passing motorist who took them to a hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. Rosenblum says the baby's death is "first and foremost" on Crockett's mind. "There's a lot more to the story than what's been reported," he says. (More Missouri stories.)
