Dad Who Shot, Killed Son: We'll Still Keep Guns in House

The father who accidentally shot and killed his 14-year-old son at a Florida gun range Sunday is speaking out to make sure others learn from the tragedy. "The gun didn't kill my boy. I did," William Clayton Brumby, 64, tells CNN. "Every round in the gun is your responsibility. When it fires you need to stand to account for it it. That's what I've spent the last two days doing, accounting for my operating error." A hot spent shell casing went down the back of Brumby's shirt after firing, and he reached back to free it with the same hand that was holding the gun, accidentally pulling the trigger while doing so. He says the bullet hit the ceiling, then ricocheted and hit his son, Stephen.

The Brumby family has guns in their home for self-defense, and Clayton Brumby says Stephen's death won't change that. He taught all seven of his kids gun safety and regularly took them to the range for target practice. "We wanted our kids to be aware of guns. I wanted them to be comfortable around them and understand them," he says. His 24-year-old son, David, who was also at the range Sunday, tells WTSP that his dad "wanted to take us to the shooting range to spend time with us but also teach us how to be a man; how to protect the family when it needed to be protected. It was just a complete freak accident." The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with expenses associated with Stephen's death. It raised more than $20,000 in less than 24 hours.
