Earlier this week, Donald Trump repeated a statement he's made before about Saddam Hussein: "He was a bad guy. Really bad guy. But you know what he did well? He killed terrorists. He did that so good." Well, the Fact Checker blog at the Washington Post has looked into the assertion—and concluded that it's completely inaccurate. In fact, the opposite appears to be closer to the truth. Rounding up a variety of sources about Saddam's relationships with terrorist groups, it finds that the Iraqi leader actually supported them—or at least tolerated them—when it was in his own best interests.

“The implication in [Trump’s] statements is that Saddam routinely rounded up and killed large numbers of international terrorists intending to do mayhem in western countries, and there’s no evidence of that kind,” says a George Washington University professor. Trump might be referring to Saddam's opposition to extremists he felt were threats to his own regime, but the assertion that Saddam was "so good" at killing terrorists "is just not credible," declares the Fact Checker blog. It bestows the worst rating of "Four Pinocchios." Click for the full post. (More Donald Trump 2016 stories.)
