Protests in Charlotte over Tuesday's police shooting of a black man turned violent on their second night Wednesday—one person was shot and seriously wounded, reports the Charlotte Observer. (Initial reports that the man was dead have been walked back; he is reportedly on life support.) City officials say the victim was not shot by police, describing it as "civilian on civilian" violence, reports the New York Times. The unrest comes in the wake of Tuesday's shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott and two competing versions of what happened: Family members say he was shot while unarmed and holding a book, while police say he had a gun and but refused repeated orders to drop it. Adding to the tension were police shootings this week in Tulsa and Ohio. (More Charlotte stories.)
