Marlins' Star Pitcher Killed in Boat Crash

Miami Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez was among three people killed early Sunday, reports the Miami Herald, just hours before what was likely to have been his final start of a stellar season. Officials responding to reports of the crash of the 30-foot vessel off Miami Beach "found a boat that was up against the jetties," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Todd Garofalo told WSVN. "They did do an initial search and they found three victims—two on top of the water, one underneath the boat and they had unfortunately passed away." The Marlins are confirming that Fernandez was killed, reports the AP; he was the team's first-round draft pick in 2011 and the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year. Fernandez was 24.

Per a team statement: "The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time." Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled. (More Miami Marlins stories.)
