Prosecutor: Man Whose Son Died in Hot Car Had 'Double Life'

A Georgia father left his 22-month-old son to die a lonely, agonizing death in the back of a hot SUV because he was unhappy with his family life and wanted to have sex with other women, a prosecutor alleged at the start of what is expected to be a grueling, month-long murder trial. Prosecutor Chuck Boring told the court that Justin Ross Harris was "cool, calm, and collected" after finding the body of Cooper Harris strapped into his car seat, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Harris, who left the boy in the vehicle outside his metro Atlanta workplace, told cops he forgot to drop him off at day care, but Boring said there is "overwhelming evidence this was not an accident."

Boring said Harris—who was allegedly having illicit online chats with up to six women during the seven hours Cooper was in the vehicle—lived a "double life" and killed his son "in one of the most unimaginable, horrible ways," per the AP. The prosecutor said that during his lunch break, Harris opened the vehicle to throw in a bag of light bulbs. He drove several miles to a shopping center after work despite what police described as the reek of "sweat, a dirty diaper, the smell of death" inside the SUV, reports CBS. The 35-year-old's defense team will deliver an opening statement on Tuesday. (Harris also faces charges of exchanging nude photos with underage girls.)
