Throughout her political career, Hillary Clinton has kept quiet about a six-year stint on the Wal-Mart board of directors, the Times reports. She championed environmental issues and the cause of women in management, but with Wal-Mart a popular Democratic Party target, the presidential candidate has been forced to cut many ties to Bentonville.

When Clinton joined the board in 1986, her husband was governor of Arkansas, where Wal-Mart is the largest employer. Behind the scenes, both Clintons continue to meet with company execs, but her tenure on the board may represent a stumbling block  for the senator because of her relative passivity on the issue of unions, which Wal-Mart has long opposed.
