The good news is suddenly rolling in for Mel Gibson: First, he welcomed his ninth child, a boy named Lars Gerard Gibson, reports People. The child is his first with his girlfriend of two years, Rosalind Ross. Then on Tuesday morning, the 61-year-old earned an Oscar nomination as best director for Hacksaw Ridge. (It's also up for best film.) Given his many controversies, the pick is something of a surprise for a man often vilified in Hollywood, notes Bustle. It's his first nomination since Braveheart 21 years ago. Meanwhile, elsewhere on the celeb baby front:

  • Actress Amy Smart, 40, revealed that the child she and husband Carter Oosterhouse welcomed on Dec. 31 came via surrogate. "After years of fertility struggles I give thanks today to our kind, loving surrogate for carrying her,” she wrote on Instagram.
  • Orange Is the New Black star Laura Prepon, 36, is expecting her first child with fiancé Ben Foster, reports US Weekly.
