Sports / basketball Lady Vols Win Back-to-Back Championships Tennessee downs Stanford 64-48 to win school's eighth title By Doug Sweeney, Newser Staff Posted Apr 8, 2008 11:56 PM CDT Copied Tennessee's Candace Parker, rear, hugs Shannon Bobbitt after Tennessee beat Stanford 64-48 to win NCAA women's basketball tournament, at the Final Four on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, in Tampa, Fla. (AP Photo/Amy Sancetta) Tennessee’s 64-48 victory over Stanford in the national championship game was won in an unusual way for the Lady Vols: they did it with defense. Coach Pat Summit employed a press to slow down the Cardinal’s potent offense and bring back-to-back titles to Tennessee, according to the Tennessean. It is the second time the Lady Vols have repeated as champions. The Lady Vol’s defense focused on player of the year Candice Wiggins, who had reached the 40-point plateau twice in the NCAA tournament. Wiggins was held to just 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Three-time All-American Candace Parker, playing with an injured shoulder, led Tennessee with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Tennessee has now won eight championships, the most of any program.
