An investigation into whether Exxon Mobil misled investors regarding its knowledge of climate change has revealed that former CEO and current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson used an alias email address to discuss the subject, says New York's attorney general. In a letter to a New York judge on Monday, AG Eric Schneiderman said Tillerson, whose middle name is Wayne, used the alias "Wayne Tracker" to "send and receive materials regarding important matters" including climate change from at least 2008 to 2015, reports Reuters. But though Exxon produced 60 documents mentioning "Wayne.Tracker@exxonmobil.com" as part of the investigation, the company never stated the address belonged to Tillerson, Schneiderman says.
The fact that Exxon never disclosed the address, or another 34 used by top executives and board members, provides "additional urgency" to unmet demands that Exxon turn over documents related to climate change, says Schneiderman, who requested a court order in Monday's letter, per CNNMoney. Exxon says it has already supplied more than 2.5 million pages of documents to Schneiderman and will respond to the court filings. As for Tillerson's alias, Exxon says it was created to allow "for secure and expedited communications between select senior company officials and the former chairman for a broad range of business-related topics." The State Department has directed all inquiries regarding the alias to Exxon, reports CNN. (More Rex Tillerson stories.)
