About a year and a half ago, as Brad Pitt learned of some "big scandal," he thought to himself how grateful he was that he'd never be a part of a Hollywood scandal again. "I live my life, I have my family, I do my thing, I don't do anything illegal, I don't cross anyone's path," he recalls thinking. Then, of course, six months ago, his world imploded, and now he finds himself living alone in the LA house that once held his six children with Angelina Jolie. In his extensive interview with GQ, he talks about the journey he's been on since then—for one thing, he quit drinking—and what he's learned. He was never good at acknowledging his own emotions, he says, "And it's hit me smack in the face with our divorce: I gotta be more. I gotta be more for them. I have to show them. And I haven't been great at it."

He doesn't get into specifics about some things—what exactly happened between him and his teenage son on a plane days before Jolie filed for divorce, for example—but he does say things have improved since the Child Services investigation was completed, and that he and Jolie (whose name he mentions just once during the interview) are working to sort things out. The alternative is a court case, in which "you spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you're right and why they're wrong, and it's just an investment in vitriolic hatred. I just refuse," he says. "And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It's just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart."
