Drug problems aside, living in Vermont is your safest bet to stay safe, according to WalletHub. The site reviewed a variety of data falling under the categories of personal, financial, workplace, and road safety, as well as emergency preparedness, to give the states a safety score out of 100, with 100 indicating the level at which you can rest easiest. The safest and least safe states:

Safest:

  1. Vermont: 65
  2. Maine: 62.5
  3. Massachusetts: 62
  4. Minnesota: 62
  5. New Hampshire: 61.5
Least Safe:
  1. Mississippi: 31
  2. Louisiana: 36
  3. Oklahoma: 38
  4. South Carolina: 39
  5. Missouri: 40
