Grammar gurus may well know "i before e except after c," but "a instead of e" is what has California Department of Transportation officials smacking their heads. Two new road signs were erected along Highway One in Sand City earlier this month, both alerting drivers to Exit 403 for Seaside and Del Rey Oaks, KSBW reports—except "Rey" was spelled "Ray" in both instances.
Unfortunately for Caltrans officials, they didn't catch on to the typo until the day after the signs were put in place, per KCRA. Even seemingly simple solutions will prove costly: Taking down both signs would run in the thousands of dollars, a Caltrans rep says, while just scrubbing the "a" and replacing it with an "e" will still cost a few hundred bucks. The signs will stay up for now as the most practical solution is determined, a Caltrans rep says. As a CNN affiliate service notes on Twitter: "Oops!" (More Highway 1 stories.)
