After a spate of doom-and-gloom headlines on North Korea, two more positive ones emerged Wednesday morning: Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sought to dial down the rhetoric and Pyongyang released a Canadian pastor. Tillerson, speaking to reporters aboard his plane as he returned to DC from Malaysia, made a point to say he sees no "imminent threat" from North Korea, per the AP. "Americans should sleep well at night," he said, adding, “Nothing that I have seen and nothing that I know of would indicate that the situation has dramatically changed in the last 24 hours." Asked about President Trump's "fire and fury" threat to North Korea, Tillerson said it's important to consider the audience it was aimed at.
"What the president is doing is sending a strong message to North Korea in language that Kim Jong Un can understand, because he doesn’t seem to understand diplomatic language," Tillerson said. Trump, he added, wanted to make clear that the US won't hesitate to defend itself or its allies. The North, meanwhile, released a 62-year-old Canadian pastor who has been held since 2015, reports the CBC. North Korean state media said Rim Hyon Su, also known as Hyeon Soo Lim, was freed on "sick bail." The South Korean native, pastor of the large Light Korean Presbyterian Church in Ontario, had been sentenced to hard labor for life in December 2015 after Pyongyang accused of him trying to overthrow the regime.
