5 Climbers Fall to Deaths After Rope Comes Loose

Sunday was a deadly day in the Austrian Alps: Five roped-together German climbers fell to their deaths after a rope apparently came loose, the BBC reports. Police say one of the climbers slipped and pulled down the rest of the group of six men, who plunged more than 600 feet before landing in a crevasse. One member of the group, a 75-year-old, survived with serious injuries and was flown to a hospital in Salzburg. The AP reports the ages of the climbers who died as 34, 56, 65, 69, and 70.

In a separate accident in the Italian Alps, three members of a nine-member group of Italians fell to their deaths when they slipped on the Adamello glacier mid-climb, CNN reports. The AP reports the group was made up of two families, and all the survivors, including two 13-year-olds, sustained injuries. (The shifting Mont Blanc glacier has given up the bodies of three climbers who died 22 years ago.)
