The New York Times says it's not so much a "changing of the guard," but a "regal passage." Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair for the past quarter-century, is stepping down in December, vacating one of the most sought-after positions in publishing. "I want to leave while the magazine is on top," the 68-year-old says. "I wanted to have a third act—and I thought, time is precious." As editor of Vanity Fair, Carter was "a ringmaster of the glittery spheres of Hollywood, Washington, and Manhattan media," according to the Times. Meanwhile, at Vanity Fair itself, they're calling his departure "Grexit." And it certainly sounds like they're going to miss the longtime editor: "Graydon has always possessed a showman's charisma, a persuasive ability to make you believe ... that this is the best job you're ever going to have."
