Amid a flurry of sexual misconduct allegations, Rep. John Conyers' office confirms that the 88-year-old was hospitalized overnight in Detroit, per WDIV. A political consultant who noted he spoke with Conyers' wife, Monica, early Thursday said the Michigan congressman is being treated for stress-related issues. "We want you to know that the congressman is resting comfortably in an area hospital," Sam Riddle told reporters. "He's doing OK, as well as he can be expected for a gentleman that's approaching 90 years of age." "The congressman's health is not what it should be, and [a] lot of that is directly attributable to this media assault," Riddle added. Both WDIV and the Detroit Free Press note the news of his medical woes came right after an interview with one of his accusers aired on the Today show.
In that appearance, Marion Brown told Savannah Guthrie that Conyers "just violated my body, he's touched me in different ways. It was very uncomfortable and very unprofessional." She describes in detail a 2005 incident in a Chicago hotel room in which she says he appeared in his underwear and asked Brown to touch his genitals. Brown says she was fired in 2014 after refusing his advances; she reached a settlement with him but decided to break the nondisclosure to "be a voice" against "sexism and gender inequality." Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi gave her weekly presser Thursday morning, and she said it's time for Conyers to step down, per Axios. "The allegations against [Conyers]—as we have learned more since Sunday—are serious, disappointing, and very credible," she said. "The brave women who came forward are owed justice. ... Congressman Conyers should resign." (More John Conyers stories.)
