So which city in America most embraces the holiday season of giving? Madison, Wis., gets the honors in a new ranking by WalletHub. The site looked at the 100 biggest cities and examined a number of metrics, including money donated to charity, the number of hours spent volunteering, and the share of sheltered homeless people. Here are the 10 most compassionate cities in the ranking, along with their overall score:

  1. Madison, Wis., 68.13
  2. Virginia Beach, Va., 63.73
  3. Lincoln, Neb., 63.59
  4. Boston, 63.52
  5. Jersey City, NJ, 63.00
  6. Pittsburgh, 61.53
  7. Chesapeake, Va., 61.48
  8. Fremont, Calif., 61.42
  9. St. Paul, Minn., 61.17
  10. Seattle, 60.90
