A Democratic senator who lost both legs while serving in the Iraq War says she isn't going to let a "draft-dodging" president lecture her on what the military needs. Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel, slammed President Trump as "Cadet Bone Spurs" in a speech on the Senate floor during a post-shutdown debate on government funding, the Daily Dot reports. "I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible," she said. "Sadly, this is something the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do. And I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger."

Trump received five deferments during the Vietnam War, four of them education-related and one because he was diagnosed with bone spurs in his feet. Duckworth, who made her remarks after Trump accused Democrats of not caring about the military, lost both her legs in 2004 when the helicopter she was co-piloting was hit by an RPG fired by insurgents in Iraq. "I have a message for Cadet Bone Spurs: If you cared about our military, you'd stop baiting Kim Jong Un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops, and millions of innocent civilians, in danger," she said Saturday, per the Hill. The same day, Trump tweeted that Democrats "are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military." (More Tammy Duckworth stories.)
