New Monopoly Edition Encourages Cheating
Trust no one.   (Hasbro)

We've all met a sticky-fingered Monopoly player who loves to be the banker. Indeed, a survey suggests that lots of Monopoly players attempt to cheat while playing the classic Hasbro board game, notes Insider. Now, Monopoly has made a version of the game just for them. Monopoly: Cheater's Edition, out this fall for $19.99, includes 15 extra cards that encourage players to cheat by such methods as moving another player's token, skipping spaces, or stealing extra money from the bank when they pass Go. One major rule change: There's no designated banker—players control the money on their turns. Those who successfully pull off the cheats are rewarded with cash and property. Players who are caught face penalties including fines and jail time.

This edition's jail is new, too. It includes a plastic handcuff attached to the board, to be worn by those in the joint, though a cheat card encourages players to slip out of it. Monopoly cited the aforementioned survey on cheaters when it released a temporary Facebook chatbot designed to dish out consequences just two weeks ago, per the Washington Post. But "we've finally decided to embrace our less-than-honest fans by encouraging them to partake in those iconic (yet sometimes unspoken) Monopoly moments that occur during family game nights," a Hasbro rep tells Insider. One thing that stays the same: The winner is the player with the most money at the end of the game. (Monopoly began as a kind of warning.)
