James Comey says "all should appreciate the FBI speaking up" against "weasels and liars," adding, "I wish more of our leaders would." The defense of the bureau he used to head, before his firing in May, comes as the White House prepares to release a classified memo claiming the FBI abused federal surveillance laws in order to obtain a warrant on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, with an announcement expected Friday, report CNN and the Hill. The FBI says it has "grave concerns about the material omissions of fact" in the memo, prepared by staffers of Rep. Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, while the Justice Department and Democrats say it could mislead the public.
Democrats, whose counter-memo was rejected for release, suggest Nunes should be removed as chairman over the memo. Though Comey didn't mention the memo specifically in his Thursday tweet, he did warn about being on the wrong side of history. "Take heart: American history shows that, in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field, so long as good people stand up. Not a lot of schools or streets named for Joe McCarthy," he wrote. Days earlier, he applauded FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, a frequent Trump target who's now retiring. He "stood tall over the last 8 months, when small people were trying to tear down an institution we all depend on," he tweeted, wishing "continued strength for the rest of the FBI."
