It had all the makings of an upbeat story: A girl turns 18, then seeks out and reunites with the parents who had given her for adoption as a baby. But as WNCN reports, the ending of this tale now involves incest charges and accusations that a father impregnated his own biological daughter and planned to marry her. Court documents lay out the circumstances: Back in 1998, Steven Pladl and his unidentified wife had a baby girl but gave her up for adoption. That girl, Katie Pladl, located them near Richmond, Virginia, in 2016 and even moved in with the couple and their two daughters (her sisters). A few months later, Steven Pladl and his wife legally separated, and the wife moved out. She subsequently learned Steven had gotten Katie pregnant, and he told her that he planned to marry their daughter, per the warrants.

At some point after that, Steven and Katie Pladl moved to North Carolina, where they were arrested on a warrant issued by police in Henrico County, Virginia. Both face extradition to Virginia on incest charges. "It's a class five felony if that occurs in Virginia and that means you can get up to 10 years in prison," a legal analyst tells WTVR. When police arrested them, the Pladls had a baby boy with them. Pladl's wife made the discovery of the pregnancy after reading the journal of one of her other daughters. She said she had no inkling of anything inappropriate until after the separation, though she said Steven had begun sleeping on the floor of Katie's bedroom, per court documents. The journal allegedly included the tidbit that Steve Pladl wanted his other daughters to begin calling Katie Pladl their step-mother. (More incest stories.)
