The Winter Olympics made history before the opening ceremony Friday when Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, became the first member of North Korea's ruling dynasty to visit the South. She arrived in a private jet at the Incheon International Airport with a delegation of officials including Kim Yong Nam, the 90-year-old who serves as North Korea's nominal head of state, reports Reuters. Kim Yo Jong, believed to be around 30 years old, is one of her brother's most trusted aides, notes the New York Times. She is to be seated near other dignitaries including Vice President Mike Pence at Friday's opening ceremony.
But as one VIP arrived in South Korea, another departed Pyeongchang in a hurry: Denmark says Crown Prince Frederik, a member of the International Olympic Committee, has rushed back to his homeland because the condition of his father, 83-year-old Prince Henrik, has "seriously worsened," the AP reports. Later Friday, Pence skipped a dinner hosted by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in which he was to have shared a table with Kim Yong Nam, the BBC reports. According to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, the vice president, who has said he won't allow Pyongyang's propaganda to "hijack" the Olympics, tried to avoid directly facing the North Korean and left the venue after five minutes.
